Diving Right In…
Please forward this along to any other pickleball addicts you meet and we’ll be eternally grateful!
The Quick Points
🎆 Fireworks on the court. Katy Perry has taken up pickleball over the years as a result of her mother’s love of the game, and it has now made its way into her charity. Katy Perry’s charitable org, the Firework Foundation, works to assist children in underserved communities and hosted its inaugural Light Up The Court pickleball tournament in Santa Barbara to raise money for scholarships, camps, and programming. She also took a jab at fellow celeb Orlando Bloom, claiming she beat him in their match. Looks like pickleball is giving celebrities across the spectrum a chance to take each other on in a more public way. They can move their spotlight from the screen to the court in a way they often can’t with other sports and across genders. The closest thing we get on a more frequent basis is celebrity golf events, but they tend to be male-dominated and relatively inaccessible unless you’ve put in considerable practice on the course.

🇺🇸 Pickleball on military time. The 96th Force Support Squadron at Elgin Air Force Base in Florida added pickleball to its various sporting activities. The base opened six new courts on Oct. 20th for $63k. Another instance of pickleball showing its versatility serving a diverse player pool, as these bases consist of not just airmen and women, but their families of all ages as well. It also seems like the base was responding to internal demand from its service members and families, as 96th Mission Support Group commander, Col. Tassika Davis, noted:
“Thanks to the 96th FSS leadership for listening to its Airmen and for bringing the newest, most exciting sport to Eglin. This innovative project brings a fresh avenue of healthy activity and adds a new dimension to mission readiness.”
💼 Work in pickleball:
Center Court Pickleball is a new Phoenix area club brand launching next year with a plan for three facilities. They are looking for a Construction Coordinator to get these beautiful buildings built.
PCKL is a fun and approachable consumer brand for recreational players. There is a full-time opportunity to be a video content creator.
The Picklr is looking for a creative content machine for their new apparel brand Stack.
What’s on our mind
💰 The Texas Ranchers corral new big-name investors. Joining the existing star-studded ownership group, rapper Lil Wayne, former NFL player Emmanuel Acho, and musician Kid Laroi all announced investments in the Ranchers. Lil Wayne is apparently also joining as a strategic advisor, where he’ll assist with brand development and collaborate on apparel. Alongside the more recognizable names include:
Alex Moore, partner at 8VC partner
The Ruia Family, owners of the Essar Group
Dennis Wong, LA Clippers Vice Chairman and CEO of Verbena Road Holdings
Richard & Pam Squires, real estate investors
Matt Mullenweg, Founder of WordPress
Steph Liu, CEO and Founder of Levitate Foundry
Some quick sound-bites from those involved:
“Pickleball is the moment and I’m excited to be part of the Texas Ranchers ownership group. I’ve enjoyed watching and couldn't pass up the opportunity to join this team of owners."
“From the get-go, we set out to build a team that, at its core, was centered in pop culture to support our mission to become one of the most recognized brands in American sports. Having Wayne’s guidance, along with the rest of this incredible ownership group, emphasizes our stance on redefining sports ownership and being a positive force for good in our local pickleball community and beyond.”
We’ll have some more to say about this in the future, but for now, it’s another exciting headline for the team and pickleball more broadly. At the industry level, more energy from investors with a large social reach is a net positive. Between these 3 new big names, their social reach exceeds 10-20M people.
What’s the obvious question - how do you incentivize these new owners to push pickleball and the Ranchers to their fanbases in a way that drives real engagement through an uptick in streaming viewers, attendance of events, or the purchase of merchandise, to name a few.
For those celebrities with the biggest brands and reach though, their time is money to them, as the opportunity cost of going to an MLP event vs. another engagement in some instances is likely larger than the entire sum of money they invested in the MLP team to begin with. One idea is to make the decision process as easy as possible for them, by running local activations in the celebrities’ home markets and in a way where they don’t just attend, but participate. Participation also creates a greater incentive for them to voice their involvement to their fanbases to come join live or via online channels - giving the Ranchers an opportunity to connect with these fanbases in a way that pairs their brand with the cache of the celebrity who brought them out.
A few thoughts on the merchandise partnerships. We agree that the Ranchers should lean into merchandise more heavily. It seems like low-hanging fruit to get their brand in the hands of existing and could-be fans. Paddles, apparel, branded nutrition, etc. could all fit with the identity of a high-performing professional team, especially when there are aspirational dynamics among fans who wish to be like their favorite pro athletes. Our guess is it’s harder to get celebrities heavily involved in marketing their brand on The Ranchers’ behalf without giving up a material portion of the economics. The celebrity is utilizing their own reach to market someone else’s product, and will likely want to share in those results. We’d expect this to be the normal course of business when inking deals with celebrities, but would push The Ranchers to negotiate terms that split the economics at the net income level and not through a gross-revenue share if The Ranchers are exclusively footing the bill on the design, manufacturing, distribution, and marketing costs.
As a last observational detour for now, while we have no visibility into the amount of money raised from the above 9 investors, our estimation is that this was done as an extension round in order to give these higher-profile investors access to The Ranchers at a valuation that’s on-par with the existing ownership group of 30+ other celebrities and business people. If it was done as a new round, it would need to be at a notably higher valuation in order to continue the momentum of the franchise. But consequently, it would force these new investors to pay up in a more meaningful way at a time where there’s still uncertainty surrounding PPA/MLP and the revenue models of all teams. By doing the round as an extension, it would allow the Ranchers to secure additional capital to grow their operations and pursue new strategies, while allowing the investors to participate at the same terms of the last valuation. One last estimation here though. Our guess is that across these 9 new investors, they each put in around $50k-100k a piece ($450k-$900k total) in order to not create significant dilution for the existing investor group. Evan and the team probably had a careful balancing act of giving attractive terms to the new investors that are on par with the last group, while giving the new investors enough equity to keep them incentivized, while not diluting the existing investors too materially who were early supporters (Ranchers operational team included), while raising enough money to grow this exciting upstart professional team into a legitimate business franchise.
There will undoubtedly be more to come. Until then, congrats to the team on bringing in another notable slate of investors.
🎨 Clean lines. Bounce Pickleball in Malvern, PA recently caught our attention. It’s a $4M, 14-court indoor facility in a former tennis and racquet club. The aesthetics inside are quite aesthetically pleasing. It presents as a modern approach to pickleball, avoiding the common designs of pickles on the walls and bright neon colors that blend with the ball during competitive play.

This color scheme 👌
A few fun facts that we pieced together from this article and this detailed interview.
Approaching 1,500 members. Memberships are $225 or $125 annually and provide certain privileges (booking ahead, first access to events, etc). Then $12 for open plays and $40/hr for private court rentals. Rough math brings this to a baseline of ~$250,000 in recurring annual membership fees. They expect to grow this to 2,500 members.
Championship courts are at least 64” × 34”. Ownership certainly wanted to entertain very high-level pickleball exhibitions.
That middle wall divider was originally going to be a net. They opted to bring in a wall to clean up sight lines and apparently nets can be quite dangerous as you trip or get entangled.
🌪️ Gearbox takes the paddle nerds by storm. And we made a shirt. The new premium-priced line of Gearbox paddles ($275) has been the focal point amongst amateurs and pros for the last week. Our friends at the Pickleball Studio have the full review here if you’re interested. TL;DR The Pro Power is causing quite a ruckus as it has almost everyone saying: “how is this legal”, “this thing is HOT”, “rules are going to have to change”. It plays like a rocket and that brings up a lot of questions around safety, ideal amateur experiences, and testing measures. The new Gearbox line is USA Pickleball approved and flying off the shelves, so you’ll definitely be seeing it on courts near you.
The question still remains whether the PPA, APP, or MLP are going to bless it. While it is fair and expected that any ball, paddle, or apparel manufacturer is going to push the limits on technical specifications, we find it hard to argue that the game should get faster at all costs. Ask any top female or male pro and they’ll say Selkirk’s 002 was already near the top of what doubles play could accommodate, especially on a 44’ x 20’ court. The pros already hit hard. The high-level men’s game is arguably too conservative and slow given how hard they can hit with blocks and counters. And amateurs already have a “problem” with becoming, and staying, bangers. Pickleball is a game of finesse, hand-eye, and strategy. We aren’t quite sure why folks are clamoring for more abrupt and potentially fear-inducing rallies.

While we aren’t usually a fan of pickleball puns, we made this shirt for ourselves and want to let our readers in on it. If you want to ride with us, here’s the link to pick up the tee.
Breaking Ground
UPDATE: As part of some new work we’re doing, we have a new facilities tracker to go alongside the existing one. This ‘new’ tracker aims to identify all of the private facilities across the country (and not just recently opened). It currently excludes almost all the franchises (e.g. Picklr/ACE). One day we’ll get to including eatertainment facilities and franchises. If you’re a more visual person than a spreadsheet person, you can also check out this interactive map of all the facilities. Let us know if you want to chat or if you have any facilities you know of that we missed (it’s still a work in progress!).

The Reset tracks publicly available court construction data to better understand the locations, costs, and development priorities going into projects across the nation. Our tracker can be found here.
Featured Developments:
Ace Pickleball Club announced a new leased space in East Louisville, KY. We had a chance to chat with Mitch and Alex who are leading this endeavor after working together over the past 5-years. Congrats on securing a location and we look forward to bringing you all some more news as we have further conversations with them.
Best of the Rest:
The City of Frisco, TX added an additional 12 public courts by painting lines on the existing tennis courts across the city. 8 were painted at Warren Sports Complex and 4 at Shawnee Trail.
Pickle in Pictures
This is pickle. The hustle to bring lights to a taped driveway, the mass of people around the court, and the open invite for new folks to participate. This fires us up. We should book a flight to Chicago…
We've been playing pickleball every Tuesday for 3 years. Lots of old and new friends each week. If you're near Champaign IL, please stop by. All skill levels welcome. We always have food on the grill, beverages in the cooler. I'm so happy we get to do this.
